Perth real estate: This incredible Dalkeith home is a work of art

CREATING an abode that meets the needs of career and family life, while being functional and attractive, can be a challenge, but it is one architect Blane Brackenridge easily met when he designed this home for artist Susannah Skinner, her husband Dr Ian Skinner and their children.

The tri-level residence boasts a large art studio and home office, along with six bedrooms, three bathrooms and plenty of room for family living.

“With five children we required a large family home with separation and space for entertaining,” Ms Skinner said.

“We chose Blane to design our home because we both love his work.

“He has huge talent for working with simple materials to create beautifully proportioned light-filled spaces that are iconic and striking modernist forms.

“As an artist, the balance between light-filled spaces and enough wall space to hang work was pivotal in framing the design.”

As well as having her studio, Ms Skinner said the entry to the home acted as a gallery space.

“There’s lots of light and plenty of raw concrete which is great material to work with,” she said.

Not all of us have quite the same artistic skills as Ms Skinner, and she said the studio would also make a perfect home office, being a beautiful space with north and south windows for light.

Along with the entry and studio, the home is full of statement rooms and features.

“I love the gallery for the light flooding in and the commanding steel-and-timber spiral staircase,” Ms Skinner said.

“I also love sitting in the sun-bathed sunken lounge in the main area.”

Other rooms to catch the eye are the bathrooms, featuring curved walls, marine hues and mosaic tiles, they given the impression of being in an aquatic environment.

And that striking staircase leads down to a circular cellar that is a wine connoisseurs’ dream, equipped with racks for over a thousand bottles, drinks fridges, bar area and dishwasher to make for easy cleaning up after a tasting session with friends.

The Skinners have lived in Dalkeith for nearly 20 years and in this home for eight.

Ms Skinner said the western suburbs was a great community with wonderful local schools.

“It is also close to the river,” she said.

“It’s a great place for dog walks – we have two dogs – and close to both the city and the beach.”
