Oppo teases smartphone camera setup with 10x hybrid zoom

Recently, Oppo confirmed that it is working on a smartphone camera system that will have a 10x zoom lens. The company said that the upcoming setup would be a lot similar to the 5x zoom prototype that it unveiled a couple of years ago. Oppo also shared that it will make use of the lateral width of the smartphone to enable the necessary physical depth through the use of a periscope-style prism.

Oppo said that the new smartphone camera system with a 10x zoom lens will start with an ultrawide perspective and zoom into medium telephoto.

Oppo is using three prime lenses in one, therefore, the company’s claim regarding “lossless” zoom will not be much accurate throughout the entire zoom range.

Though the 10x zoom lens camera setup will have optical image stabilization, Oppo has not given any details regarding the aperture of the lens that it will use in the camera setup.

Talking about other smartphones that have similar technology in the camera, Asus Zenfone Zoom did not provide excellent results with a 3x f/2.7-4.8 lens, and neither did the iPhone XS’s 2x f/2.4 “telephoto” lens made a good bet in the market regarding the camera quality.

There have been reports that Oppo will show off the camera at MWC 2019 next month, but the company didn’t make it clear whether it will be a commercial product or not. Oppo demonstrated the 5x zoom camera at MWC 2017, but it never entered the market, but this time Oppo somehow indicated that it is ready for mass production of its new camera setup.

Oppo, on the other hand, also shared that it will soon come up with a new in-display fingerprint sensor with 15 times the active area of mainstream competing solutions and the tech will ship in products this year, the smartphone manufacturer added.

Earlier in 2018, Vivo also demonstrated a similar product with the Apex concept phone, but it didn’t include the larger “half-screen” fingerprint sensor.
