ZAGREB, Croatia – A gunman on Monday shot and injured a police officer beyond the Croatian government headquarters in the capital, Zagreb, before killing himself, authorities said.
The shooting occurred about 8 pm in Trg Svetog Marka, or St. Mark’s Square, that hosts the Croatian parliament construction along with other important state associations.
Authorities said the supposed attacker fled the scene following the shooting and later committed suicide at a neighboring Zagreb region.
The 31-year old officer failed surgery and his condition is more stable,” said the authorities.
Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic reported an investigation is underway to ascertain whether the fire was an”occasion of human personality.”
“we don’t understand enough at this time,” Plenkovic informed reporters. He stated the attacker walked into the square, and it will be offered to the general public despite hosting high state associations.
“We’ve got a culture of openness,” explained Plenkovic. “That brings us into a new circumstance and rethinking of safety ”
Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic explained the only real way to completely protect the square would be to shut it to the general public. Bozinovic stated”that will signify no freedom of motion ”
No additional details were immediately available. State HRT tv reported the officer has been taken four times. The N1 TV said that the shooter had an automatic weapon.
Authorities have sealed off the area round the square and most proposed actions by the authorities or other state associations in the square have already been cancelled.
A helicopter may be seen flying across town.
