Background on Cursed Womb: Death Painting

The mastermind behind the creation of Death Painting was none other than Noritoshi Kamo. The same Noritoshi who is one of the vilest sorcerers in JJK. This story is from the Meiji Era where a woman who gave birth to a child who was half-human and half-cursed. Her family discarded her and she had to flee from her town.

She stumbled across the temple operated by sorcerers. Over there she found Noritoshi who imprisoned both mother and child. The woman gave birth to 9 children but at the same time had to go with 9 abortions.

In the current timeline, 2 of the 9 wombs are in the possession of Mahito.

What Are Cursed Womb: Death Paintings? Their Appearance and Power

On the outlook, the wombs look like fetuses. They are incapable of doing anything with their strength. However, when they get assimilated into a human vessel, they turn into a half-human half-cursed spirit. Furthermore, they can use Jujutsu despite the host possessing abilities existing to none.

One of the advantages that these creatures have is that they have conflicting characteristics in their bodies. This sometimes creates confusion in the mind of opponents whether it is a human or a cursed spirit.

Death Wombs: Cursed Paintings are usually considered pretty strong in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen. If you had to compare them in terms of grade then their strength would be equivalent to special grade spirits.

Who Are Cursed Womb: Death Paintings?

As of now, we have confirmed three Cursed Womb: Death Paintings; Choso, Kechizu, and Eso. They share a very strong bond. Being sealed for over 150 years together, all three of them have only survived because of each other.

Choso

Choso was first introduced in the manga in chapter 62 as an antagonist of the series. However, as time went by, he became allies with Yuji Itadori. He is the only one of the three brothers who are not part of the Mahito’s group.

Kechizo                                                                                                   

He became part of the series a bit earlier than his brother when he clashed with Yuji, Nobara and Megumi. Unlike his brothers, his appearance is more gravitated toward cursed beings. He is the youngest of them all and a bit immature at times.

Eso

He just like his younger brother Kechizo got introduced similarly. Eso was one of the biggest thorns to the protagonists during Death Painting Arc.

Right now we only have three of the Death Paintings but we may see them very soon. Their characters aren’t introduced yet but we can suggest what their names may be.

The Death Paintings are directly inspired by the set of paintings called Kusozu. They depict the nine phases of death and the Death Paintings are probably named after them. These are the nine stages of death in Kusozu.
